195. Calculations based on Troop Basis (S).

196. See Studies Nos 3 and 4 of the present series.

197. AGF-type units, as of 31 March 1945, had an authorized strength of 2,502,148 enlisted men. They were expected in the winter of 1942-43 (troop bases of that date) to have approximately 3,200,000 enlisted men by the end of 1943. During 1944, according to plans obtaining in the winter of 1942-43, some 750,000 enlisted men were to be recovered by various economies and used to create new tactical units. (See note 54 above.) Some of these recoveries would come from reduction of AGF T/O's, and hence if used to form new AGF units would add nothing to AGF total strength. A few would be reassigned to other than AGF units - not many, since the intention was to expand combat forces. Assuming that only half the 750,000 had been added in 1944 to the 3,200,000 intended to be reached by the end of 1943, the strength of AGF units would have been 3,575,000 by the end of 1944 and in 1945. This is 1,072,852 more than the 2,502,148 authorized on 31 March 1945. The disparity would be greater were it possible to include officers in this calculation.
