  • Constituted 28 July 1866 in the Regular Army as Company E, 7th Cavalry
  • Organized 22 December 1866 at Fort Riley, Kansas
  • (Cavalry companies officially designated as troops in 1883)
  • (7th Cavalry assigned in December 1917 to the 15th Cavalry Division; relieved in May 1918 from assignment to the 15th Cavalry Division; assigned 13 September 1921 to the 1st Cavalry Division; dismounted 28 February 1943 and reorganized 4 December 1943 partly under cavalry and partly under infantry tables of organization; reorganized wholly as infantry 20 July 1945 but retained cavalry designations)
  • Redesignated 25 March 1949 as Company E, 7th Cavalry
  • (7th Cavalry relieved 15 October 1957 from assignment to the 1st Cavalry Division)
  • Inactivated 1 November 1957 in Japan; concurrently redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 5th Reconnaissance Squadron, 7th Cavalry
  • Redesignated 26 March 1966 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry, and assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division (organic elements concurrently constituted)
  • Activated 1 April 1966 at Fort Carson, Colorado
  • Inactivated 29 March 1971 at Fort Lewis, Washington
  • Activated 21 September 1975 at Fort Hood, Texas
  • Relieved 30 September 1978 from assignment to the 1st Cavalry Division and inactivated at Fort Hood, Texas
  • Redesignated 25 February 2004 as the 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry, and assigned to the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3d Infantry Division (Military Intelligence Company, 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry, concurrently constituted in the Regular Army)
  • (Military Intelligence Company, 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry, activated 16 March 2004 at Fort Stewart, Georgia; inactivated 15 July 2004 at Fort Stewart, Georgia)
  • Squadron activated 16 July 2004 at Fort Stewart, Georgia
  • Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment
