  • Constituted 30 June 1874 in the Pennsylvania National Guard as the 8th Infantry Regiment
  • Organized 4 August 1874 in south-central Pennsylvania
  • Mustered into Federal service 11-12 May 1898 at Mount Gretna as the 8th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry; mustered out of Federal service 7 March 1899 at Augusta, Georgia
  • Reorganized 21 April-21 June 1899 in south-central Pennsylvania as the 8th Infantry Regiment
  • Mustered into Federal service 9 July 1916 at Mount Gretna; mustered out of Federal service 27 February-4 March 1917
  • Mustered into Federal service 19-23 July 1917 at home stations; drafted into Federal service 5 August 1917
  • Consolidated 11 October 1917 with the 16th Infantry Regiment (organized in 1878) and consolidated unit concurrently reorganized and redesignated as the 112th Infantry and assigned to the 28th Division
  • Demobilized 6 May 1919 at Camp Dix, New Jersey
  • Former 8th Infantry Regiment reorganized 16 October 1919 in the Pennsylvania National Guard in south-central Pennsylvania as the 8th Infantry, with Headquarters at Harrisburg
  • Consolidated 1 June 1921 with elements of the 1st Cavalry; concurrently converted and redesignated as the 104th Cavalry and assigned to the 21st Cavalry Division; Headquarters Federally recognized 21 July 1921 at Harrisburg
  • Relieved 18 June 1939 from assignment to the 21st Cavalry Division and assigned to the 22d Cavalry Division
  • Relieved 23 September 1940 from assignment to the 22d Cavalry Division
  • Inducted into Federal service 17 February 1941 at home stations

  • Reorganized 1 September 2006 to consist of the 1st Squadron, an element of the 28th Infantry Division, and the 2d Squadron, an element of the 56th Brigade Combat Team, 28th Infantry Division
