  • Organized and Federally recognized 19 - 21 February 1922 in the Massachusetts National Guard at Framingham as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 181st Infantry
  • Redesignated 1 April 1923 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 181st Infantry, an element of the 26th Division
  • (location of Headquarters Company changed in 8 March 1934 to Fitchburg)
  • Reorganized and redesignated 1 May 1940 as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 2d Battalion, 181st Infantry; concurrently, location changed to Fitchburg
  • Inducted into Federal service 16 January 1941 at Fitchburg
  • (26th Division redesignated 12 February 1942 as the 26th Infantry Division)
  • Reorganized and redesignated 6 July 1942 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 181st Infantry
  • (181st Infantry relieved 27 January 1943 from assignment to the 26th Infantry Division)
  • Inactivated 8 February 1944 at Fort Dix, New Jersey
  • Consolidated 8 July 1946 with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 328th Infantry (see ANNEX 1), and consolidated unit designated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 181st Infantry; concurrently, assigned to the 26th Infantry Division
  • Reorganized and Federally recognized 16 April 1947 at Fitchburg
  • Converted and redesigned 1 May 1959 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 226th Transportation Battalion, an element of the 26th Infantry Division
  • Expanded, converted and redesignated 1 March 1963 as the 26th Aviation Battalion
  • 26th Aviation Battalion broken up 1 October 1986 and its elements reorganized as follows:
  • Headquarters and Headquarters Company as Headquarters and Company, Aviation Brigade, 26th Infantry Division (hereafter separate lineage); Company A as the 164th Aviation Company; Company B as the 963d Aviation Company; Company E as the 1220th Transportation Company (remainder of battalion, hereafter separate lineages)
  • 164th Aviation Company, 963d Aviation Company, 1220th Transportation Company, and the 122d Aviation Battalion (see ANNEX 2) consolidated 1 October 1987 to form the 126th Aviation, a parent regiment under the United States Army Regimental System, organized in the Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts Army National Guard, with Headquarters at North Kingstown, Rhode Island, to consist of the 1st Battalion, Companies D, E, and F, elements of the 26th Infantry Division, and Company G
  • Reorganized 1 September 1990 in the Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont Army National Guard to consist of the 1st and 2d Battalions and Company E, elements of the 26th Infantry Division, and Company G
  • Reorganized 1 September 1993 in the Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Vermont Army National Guard to consist of the 1st Battalion, Company F, and the 2d Battalion, an element of the 42d Infantry Division
  • Reorganized 1 September 1996 in the Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Vermont Army National Guard to consist of the 1st Battalion, the 2d Battalion, an element of the 42d Infantry Division, and Companies E and F
