- Activated 3 February 1962 at Fort Hood, Texas
- Inactivated 24 June 1967 at Fort Hood, Texas
- Activated 21 August 1978 in Germany
- Inactivated 16 November 1987 in Germany
- Redesignated 16 October 1988 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 501st Aviation; concurrently relieved from assignment to the 1st Armored Division and activated in Korea (organic elements concurrently constituted and activated)
- Battalion inactivated (less Companies A and B) 15 February 1996 in Korea
- Assigned 16 February 1997 to the 1st Armored Division and activated in Germany
- Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 2d Battalion, 501st Aviation Regiment
- Relieved 15 August 2006 from assignment to the 1st Armored Division and inactivated at Fort Riley, Kansas
- Assigned 16 September 2011 to the Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Armored Division and activated at Fort Bliss, Texas
