- Organized 13 August 1887 in the Dakota Territorial Militia at Valley City as the Band, 1st Dakota Infantry
- Reorganized and redesignated 2 November 1889 in the Organized Militia of North Dakota as the Band, 1st North Dakota Infantry (concurrently, Territory of Dakota reorganized as the states of North and South Dakota)
- Location changed in 1891 to Lisbon
- (Organized Militia of North Dakota redesignated 6 March 1891 as the North Dakota National Guard)
- Mustered into Federal service 19 June 1916 at Lisbon; mustered out of Federal service 14 February 1917 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota
- Called into Federal service 15 July 1917; drafted into Federal service 5 August 1917
- Redesignated 4 October 1917 as the Band Section, Headquarters Company, 164th Infantry and assigned to the 41st Division
- Demobilized 28 February 1919 at Camp Dix, New Jersey, and relieved from assignment to the 41st Division
- Reorganized and Federally recognized 4 April 1922 in the North Dakota National Guard at Lisbon as the Band Section, 164th Infantry, and assigned to the 34th Division
- Redesignated 1 May 1940 as the Band, 164th Infantry
- Inducted into Federal service 10 February 1941 at Lisbon
- Relieved from assignment 8 December 1941 to the 34th Division
- Assigned 24 May 1942 to the Americal Division
- Relieved from assignment 16 November 1943 to the Americal Division
- Reorganized and redesignated 10 January 1944 as the 294th Army Band
- Redesignated 1 June 1944 as the 294th Army Ground Forces Band
- Inactivated 31 May 1946 on Luzon
- Reorganized and Federally recognized 8 November 1946 in the North Dakota National Guard at Lisbon as the 294th Army Ground Forces Band
- Redesignated 27 August 1947 as the 294th Army Band
- Disbanded 1 April 1959 and remaining personnel transferred to the 188th Army Band (188th Army Band concurrently organized and Federally recognized at Fargo)
