  • Constituted 13 October 1942 in the Army of the United States as the 168th Chemical Smoke Generator Company and activated at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts
  • Inactivated 10 April 1946 at Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland
  • Redesignated 20 December 1948 as the 388th Chemical Smoke Generator Company and allotted to the Organized Reserve Corps
  • Activated 1 February 1949 at Hartford, Illinois
  • Ordered into active military service 19 August 1950 at Hartford, Illinois
  • (Organized Reserve Corps redesignated 9 July 1952 as the Army Reserve)
  • Reorganized and redesignated 15 March 1954 as the 388th Chemical Company Released from active military service 27 October 1954 and reverted to reserve status
  • Inactivated 17 January 1955 at Hartford, Illinois
  • Activated 23 April 1956 at Rockford, Illinois
  • Location changed 31 January 1968 to Bloomington, Illinois; on 16 April 1999 to St. Louis, Missouri
