Inactivated 1 November 1945 at Camp Stoneman, California
Reorganized and Federally recognized 19 December 1946 as the 1st Battalion, 172d Infantry, with Headquarters at Rutland
Ordered into active Federal service 5 September 1950 at home stations
(1st Battalion, 172d Infantry [NGUS] organized and Federally recognized 29 January 1953 with Headquarters at Rutland)
Released from active Federal service 15 June 1954 and reverted to state control; concurrently, Federal recognition withdrawn from the 1st Battalion, 172d Infantry (NGUS)
Reorganized and redesignated 1 March 1959 as the 3d Reconnaissance Squadron, 102d Armored Cavalry, and relieved from assignment to the 43d Infantry Division
Reorganized and redesignated 1 April 1963 as the 2d Battalion, 172d Armor, an element of the 86th Infantry Brigade
Reorganized and redesignated 1 February 1964 as the 3d Battalion, 172d Armor, and relieved from assignment to the 86th Infantry Brigade
Reorganized and redesignated 1 February 1968 as the 2d Battalion, 172d Armor, an element of the 50th Armored Division
(172d Armor withdrawn 1 May 1989 from the Combat Arms Regimental System and reorganized under the United States Army Regimental System)
Reorganized 1 September 1993 as the 2d Battalion, 172d Armor, an element of the 42d Infantry Division
Ordered into active Federal service 15 November 2004 at home stations
Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 2d Battalion, 172d Armored Regiment
