Constituted 3 May 1861 in the Regular Army as Companies A and I, 2d Battalion, 13th Infantry

Organized 15 May 1865 at Camp Dennison, Ohio

Reorganized and redesignated 21 September 1866 as Companies A and I, 22d Infantry

Companies A and I, 22d Infantry, consolidated 4 May 1869 and consolidated unit designated as Company A, 22d Infantry

(22d Infantry assigned 24 March 1923 to the 4th Division [later redesignated as the 4th Infantry Division])

Inactivated 30 June 1927 at Fort McPherson, Georgia

Activated 1 June 1940 at Fort McClellan, Alabama

Inactivated 1 March 1946 at Camp Butner, North Carolina

Activated 15 July 1947 at Fort Ord, California

Reorganized and redesignated 1 April 1957 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battle Group, 22d Infantry, and remained assigned to the 4th Infantry Division (organic elements concurrently constituted and activated)

Reorganized and redesignated 1 October 1963 as the 1st Battalion, 22d Infantry

Inactivated 1 August 1984 at Fort Carson, Colorado, and relieved from assignment to the 4th Infantry Division

Assigned 1 May 1986 to the 10th Mountain Division and activated at Fort Drum, New York

Relieved 16 February 1996 from assignment to the 10th Mountain Division and assigned to the 4th Infantry Division

Relieved 16 December 2004 from assignment to the 4th Infantry Division and assigned to the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division

Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 1st Battalion, 22d Infantry Regiment
