  • Constituted 7 December 1747 by official recognition of the Military Association of the City of Philadelphia, founded 21 November 1747 at Philadelphia by Benjamin Franklin
  • Organized 29 December 1747 as the Associated Regiment of Foot of the City of Philadelphia
  • Expanded, reorganized, and redesignated 1 May – 1 August 1775 as the 1st, 2d, and 3d Battalions of Foot of the City of Philadelphia
  • Mustered into Continental service 3 July 1776 at Philadelphia, mustered out of Continental service 23 August 1776 at Philadelphia
  • Mustered into Continental service 23 November 1776; mustered out of Continental service 23 January 1777 at Morristown, New Jersey
  • Reorganized 17 March 1777 as the Philadelphia Brigade of Militia
  • Mustered into Continental service in August 1777 at Philadelphia; mustered out of Continental service 3 January 1778 at Lancaster, Pennsylvania
  • Reorganized 11 April 1793 in the Pennsylvania Militia as the 1st Brigade, 1st Division
  • Volunteer infantry companies of the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, mustered into Federal service 24 August 1814 at Philadelphia as the 1st Regiment; mustered out of Federal service 4 January 1815 at Philadelphia
  • Volunteer infantry companies reorganized in 1821 as the 102d (1st Volunteer) and 108th (2d Volunteer) Regiments
  • Consolidated 21 April 1858 to form the 1st Infantry Regiment
  • Mustered into Federal service 24 April 1861 at Philadelphia as the 18th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment; mustered out of Federal service 6 August 1861 at Philadelphia
  • Veterans of the 18th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment and members of the Philadelphia Volunteer Fire Department mustered into Federal service 10 August 1861 at Philadelphia as the 72d Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment (Fire Zouaves); mustered out of Federal service 24 August 1864 at Philadelphia
  • Veterans of the 72d Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment (Fire Zouaves) reorganized in the fall of 1867 in the Pennsylvania Militia at Philadelphia as the Weccacoe Legion and Philadelphia Fire Zouaves
  • After 1867 the above units underwent changes as follows:
  • Weccacoe Legion redesignated 6 March 1868 as the Keystone Guards; Company A disbanded 30 September 1868 at Philadelphia (Weccacoe Fire Company remained in service); remainder of Keystone Guards disbanded 1 March 1869 at Philadelphia; (Pennsylvania Militia redesignated 7 April 1870 as the Pennsylvania National Guard); Weccacoe Legion reorganized 29 April 1870 in the Pennsylvania National Guard at Philadelphia as a company; expanded 22 October – 26 November 1878 to form a battalion
  • Philadelphia Fire Zouaves expanded in 1868 to form a regiment; redesignated in 1869 as the 4th Infantry Regiment; consolidated in 1872 with the 8th Infantry Regiment (organized in 1870) and consolidated unit designated as the 4th Infantry Regiment; reorganized by 1876 as the 4th Provisional Battalion; disbanded 8 March 1876 at Philadelphia
  • Weccacoe Legion consolidated 31 July 1879 with the Artillery Corps, Washington Grays (organized 26 March 1813), and consolidated unit reorganized and redesignated as the 3d Infantry Regiment
  • (Former Artillery Corps, Washington Grays, transferred 11 December 1879 to the 1st Infantry Regiment – hereafter separate lineage)
  • Mustered into Federal service 9 May – 22 July 1898 in Pennsylvania as the 3d Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry; mustered out of Federal service 22 October 1898 at Philadelphia
  • Reorganized 1 February – 30 March 1899 at Philadelphia as the 3d Infantry Regiment
  • Mustered into Federal service 1 July 1916; mustered out of Federal service 18 October 1916
  • Mustered into Federal service 28 March 1917 at Philadelphia; drafted into Federal service 5 August 1917
  • Consolidated 11 October 1917 with the 10th Infantry Regiment (organized in 1873); and consolidated unit concurrently reorganized and redesignated as the 110th Infantry and assigned to the 28th Division
  • Demobilized 24 May 1919 at Camp Dix, New Jersey
  • Former 3d Infantry Regiment reorganized 16 October 1919 in the Pennsylvania National Guard at Philadelphia as the 3d Infantry
  • Consolidated 1 April 1921 with the 6th Infantry (see ANNEX); consolidated unit concurrently reorganized and redesignated as the 111th Infantry and assigned to the 28th Division; Headquarters Federally recognized 3 August 1921 at Philadelphia
  • Inducted into Federal service 17 February 1941 at home stations
  • Relieved 17 February 1942 from assignment to the 28th Division
  • Inactivated 22 November 1945 at Camp Anza, California
  • Reorganized and Federally recognized 27 February 1947 with Headquarters at Philadelphia
  • Consolidated 1 June 1959 with the 644th Engineer Battalion (organized and Federally recognized 1 July 1948 at Philadelphia), and consolidated unit designated as the 111th Infantry, a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System, to consist of the 1st and 2d Battle Groups, elements of the 28th Infantry Division
  • Reorganized 1 April 1963 to consist of the 1st and 2d Battalions, elements of the 28th Infantry Division
  • Reorganized 17 February 1968 to consist of the 1st Battalion, an element of the 28th Infantry Division, and the 2d Battalion, an element of the 42d Infantry Division
  • Reorganized 1 April 1975 to consist of the 1st and 2d Battalions, elements of the 28th Infantry Division
  • Withdrawn 5 April 1988 from the Combat Arms Regimental System and reorganized under the United States Army Regimental System
  • Reorganized 1 September 1994 to consist of the 1st Battalion, an element of the 28th Infantry Division
  • Location of Headquarters changed 1 October 2002 to Norristown
  • Ordered into active Federal service 11 March 2003 at home stations; released from active Federal service 10 March 2004 and reverted to state control
  • Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 111th Infantry Regiment
  • Reorganized 1 September 2006 to consist of the 1st Battalion, an element of the 56th Brigade Combat Team, 28th Infantry Division
  • Ordered into active Federal service 19 September 2008 at home stations; released from active Federal service 23 October 2009 and reverted to state control

  • Consolidated with the State Fencibles (organized 26 May 1813) and mustered into Federal service 10-13 May 1898 at Mount Gretna as the 6th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry; mustered out of Federal service 17 October 1898 in Pennsylvania
  • Reorganized 29 November 1898 – 27 March 1899 in southeastern Pennsylvania as the 6th Infantry Regiment
  • Mustered into Federal service 6-7 July 1916 at Mount Gretna; mustered out of Federal service 22-28 February 1917
  • Called into Federal service 15 July 1917 at home stations; drafted into Federal service 5 August 1917
  • Consolidated 11 October 1917 with the 18th Infantry Regiment (organized in 1831); and consolidated unit concurrently reorganized and redesignated as the 111th Infantry and assigned to the 28th Division
