  • Organized 17 May 1879 from existing companies in the Kansas Volunteer Militia as the 1st Infantry Regiment
  • (Kansas Volunteer Militia redesignated 7 March 1885 as the Kansas National Guard)
  • Reorganized and mustered into Federal service 9-13 May 1898 at Topeka as the 20th Kansas Volunteer Infantry; mustered out of Federal service 28 October 1899 at the Presidio of San Francisco, California; concurrently, consolidated with the 1st Regiment of Infantry (Provisional), and reorganized in the Kansas National Guard as the 1st Infantry Regiment
  • Mustered into Federal service 27 June 1916 at Fort Riley, Kansas; mustered out of Federal service 30 October 1916 at Fort Riley, Kansas
  • Drafted into Federal service 5 August 1917
  • Consolidated 1 October 1917 with the 2d Infantry Regiment, Kansas National Guard (organized in 1880); consolidated unit concurrently reorganized and redesignated as the 137th Infantry and assigned to the 35th Division
  • Demobilized 9-11 May 1919 at Camp Funston, Kansas
  • Former 1st Infantry Regiment consolidated 4 November 1921 with the 4th Infantry Regiment (organized 29 November 1918); consolidated unit concurrently reorganized in the Kansas National Guard as the 137th Infantry and assigned to the 35th Division
  • Inducted into Federal service 23 December 1940 at home stations
  • (Headquarters, 35th Division redesignated 1 March 1942 as Headquarters, 35th Infantry Division)
  • Inactivated 5 December 1945 at Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky
  • Reorganized and Federally recognized 17 July 1947 with Headquarters at Wichita
  • Reorganized 1 May 1959 as a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System to consist of the 1st and 2d Battle Groups, elements of the 35th Infantry Division
  • Reorganized 1 April 1963 to consist of the 1st and 2d Battalions, elements of the 69th Infantry Brigade
  • Reorganized 15 December 1967 to consist of the 1st, 2d, and 3d Battalions, elements of the 69th Infantry Brigade
  • (1st and 2d Battalions ordered into active Federal service 13 May 1968 at home stations; released from active Federal service 12 December 1969 and reverted to state control)
  • Reorganized 1 February 1976 to consist of the 1st and 2d Battalions, elements of the 69th Infantry Brigade
  • Reorganized 25 August 1984 to consist of the 1st and 2d Battalions, elements of the 35th Infantry Division
  • Withdrawn 1 May 1989 from the Combat Arms Regimental System and reorganized under the United States Army Regimental System
  • Reorganized 1 September 1992 to consist of the 2d Battalion, an element of the 35th Infantry Division
  • (2d Battalion ordered into active Federal service 1 February 2002 at home stations; released from active Federal service 19 October 2002 and reverted to state control)
  • (2d Battalion ordered into active Federal service 1 September 2005 at home stations)
  • Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 137th Infantry Regiment
  • (2d Battalion released from active Federal service 27 February 2007 and reverted to state control)
  • Consolidated 1 September 2008 with the 635th Armored Regiment (see ANNEX), and consolidated unit designated as the 137th Infantry
  • (2d Battalion ordered into active Federal service 7 May 2010 at home stations; released from active Federal service 10 June 2011 and reverted to state control)

  • Constituted 25 March 1953 in the Air National Guard as the 891st Engineer Aviation Battalion
  • Allotted 1 August 1953 to the Kansas Army National Guard
  • Organized and Federally recognized 13 January 1954 from new and existing units with Headquarters at Manhattan
  • Reorganized and redesignated 15 January 1957 as the 891st Engineer Battalion
  • Converted and redesignated 1 February 1976 as the 635th Armor, a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System, to consist of the 1st Battalion, an element of the 69th Infantry Brigade
  • Reorganized 1 October 1986 to consist of the 1st and 2d Battalions, elements of the 35th Infantry Division
  • Withdrawn 1 June 1989 from the Combat Arms Regimental System and reorganized under the United States Army Regimental System
  • Reorganized 1 September 1997 to consist of the 1st Battalion
  • (1st Battalion ordered into active Federal service 24 October 2004 at home stations)
  • Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 635th Armored Regiment
  • (1st Battalion released from active Federal service 21 April 2006 and reverted to state control)
