158th INFANTRY REGIMENT
(BUSHMASTERS)

  • Organized as the 1st Arizona Volunteer Infantry and mustered into Federal service September – November 1865 by companies (A, B, C, E, F); mustered out of Federal service September – November 1866
  • Reorganized May 1882 – April 1892 in the Arizona Militia as the 1st Regiment, Infantry
  • (Arizona Militia redesignated 19 March 1891 as Arizona National Guard)
  • Mustered into Federal service May – June 1916; drafted into Federal service 5 August 1917
  • Reorganized and redesignated 3 October 1917 as the 158th Infantry, and assigned to the 40th Division
  • Demobilized 3 May 1919 at Camp Kearny, California
  • Reorganized and Federally recognized 12 September 1924 in the Arizona National Guard as the 158th Infantry, with Headquarters at Phoenix, and assigned to the 45th Division
  • Inducted into Federal service 16 September 1940 at home stations
  • Relieved 11 February 1942 from assignment to the 45th Division
  • Inactivated 17 January 1946 in Japan
  • Reorganized and Federally recognized 18 February 1947 in the Arizona National Guard as the 158th Infantry, with Headquarters at Tucson
  • Reorganized 1 March 1959 as the 158th Infantry, a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System, to consist of the 1st and 2d Battle Groups
  • Reorganized and redesignated 1 March 1963 as the 158th Infantry, to consist of the 1st, 2d, and 3d Battalions
  • Regiment broken up 10 December 1967 and its elements reorganized and redesignated as follows:
  • 1st Battalion converted, reorganized, and redesignated as the 1581st Military Police Battalion
  • (2d Battalion converted, reorganized, and redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 1120th Transportation Battalion; the 2220th Transportation Company; and the 2221st Transportation Company - hereafter separate lineages)
  • (3d Battalion converted, reorganized, and redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1583d Military Police Battalion; the 1154th Military Police Company; the 1155th Military Police Company; and the 1156th Military Police Company - hereafter separate lineages)
  • 1581st Military Police Battalion reorganized and redesignated 1 September 1969 as the 158th Military Police Battalion
  • Reorganized and redesignated 1 July 1975 as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 158th Military Police Group
  • Converted, reorganized, and redesignated 1 April 1976 as the 2d Battalion, 180th Field Artillery
  • Reorganized 1 September 1992 to form the 180th Field Artillery (see ANNEX), to consist of the 1st Battalion, with Headquarters at Mesa
  • Ordered into active Federal service 30 January 2003 at home stations; released from active Federal service 29 January 2004 and reverted to state control
  • Converted, reorganized, and redesignated 1 September 2005 as the 158th Infantry, a parent regiment under the United States Army Regimental System, to consist of the 1st Battalion, with Headquarters at Mesa
  • Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 158th Infantry Regiment
  • Ordered into active Federal service 3 January 2007 at home stations; released from active Federal service 30 June 2008 and reverted to state control
  • ANNEX
  • Constituted 16 July 1919 in the Arizona National Guard as Battery B, 1st Field Artillery
  • Organized and Federally recognized 24 March 1921 at Mesa
  • Redesignated 19 October 1921 as Battery E, 158th Field Artillery, an element of the 45th Division
  • Inducted into Federal service 16 September 1940 at Mesa
  • Reorganized and redesignated 23 February 1942 as Battery B, 207th Field Artillery Battalion, and relieved from assignment to the 45th Division
  • Inactivated 16 November 1945 at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey
  • Reorganized and Federally recognized 9 July 1947 in the Arizona National Guard at Mesa as Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 480th Field Artillery Battalion (remainder of battalion organized 1947 – 1948 from new and existing units)
  • 480th Field Artillery Battalion reorganized and redesignated 1 March 1959 as the 180th Artillery, a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System, to consist of the 1st Howitzer Battalion
  • Reorganized 10 December 1967 to consist of the 1st Battalion
  • Redesignated 1 May 1972 as the 180th Field Artillery
  • Reorganized 1 April 1976 to consist of the 1st and 2d Battalions
  • Withdrawn 1 June 1989 from the Combat Arms Regimental System and reorganized under the United States Army Regimental System
