- Reorganized 1 January 1864 as the 4th Iowa Veteran Infantry Regiment
- Mustered out of Federal service 24 July 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky
- Reorganized 1868-1876 in Iowa as independent companies of volunteer militia
- Companies consolidated 18 February 1876 and 15 January 1877 to form the 3d and 5th Infantry Regiments, respectively
- (Iowa State Militia redesignated 3 April 1878 as the Iowa National Guard)
- 3d and 5th Infantry Regiments consolidated 30 April 1892 and consolidated unit designated as the 3d Infantry Regiment
- Mustered into Federal service 30 May 1898 at Des Moines as the 51st Iowa Volunteer Infantry; mustered out of Federal service 2 November 1899 at San Francisco, California
- Reorganized 26 March 1900 in the Iowa National Guard as the 51st Infantry Regiment with Headquarters at Des Moines
- Redesignated 26 November 1902 as the 55th Infantry Regiment
- Redesignated 4 July 1915 as the 3d Infantry Regiment
- Mustered into Federal service 26 June 1916 at Camp Dodge, Iowa; mustered out of Federal service 20 February 1917 at Des Moines
- Drafted into Federal service 5 August 1917
- Reorganized and redesignated 16 August 1917 as the 168th Infantry and assigned to the 42d Division
- Demobilized 17 May 1919 at Camp Dodge, Iowa
- Reorganized 1920-1921 in the Iowa National Guard as the 168th Infantry and assigned to the 34th Division (later redesignated as the 34th Infantry Division); Headquarters Federally recognized 13 July 1921 at Des Moines

- Reorganized 1 May 1959 as a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System to consist of the 1st Battle Group, an element of the 34th Infantry Division
- Reorganized 1 March 1963 to consist of the 1st Battle Group and relieved from assignment to the 34th Infantry Division
- Reorganized 1 March 1964 to consist of the 1st and 2d Battalions
- Reorganized 1 January 1968 to consist of the 1st Battalion, an element of the 47th Infantry Division
- Withdrawn 1 May 1989 from the Combat Arms Regimental System and reorganized under the United States Army Regimental System
- Reorganized 10 February 1991 to consist of the 1st Battalion, an element of the 34th Infantry Division
- (1st Battalion ordered into active Federal service 5 March 2004 at home stations; released from active Federal service 1 September 2005 and reverted to state control; concurrently, relieved from assignment to the 34th Infantry Division)
