178th Infantry Regiment

  • Organized in 1878 in the Illinois State Militia as the 16th Battalion with Headquarters at Chicago
  • Disbanded in 1882
  • Reorganized in 1883 in the Illinois State Militia at Chicago as the Chicago Light Infantry
  • Disbanded 2 May 1887 at Chicago
  • Reorganized 5 May 1890 in the Illinois State Militia at Chicago as the 9th Infantry Battalion
  • Mustered 4 November 1895 into the Illinois National Guard
  • Expanded, reorganized, and mustered into Federal service 12-21 July 1898 at Camp Tanner, Illinois, as the 8th Illinois Volunteer Infantry; mustered out of Federal service 3 April 1899 at Chicago
  • Reorganized 18 April 1899 in the Illinois National Guard at Chicago as the 9th Infantry Battalion
  • Redesignated 6 May 1899 as the 8th Infantry Battalion
  • Expanded, reorganized, and redesignated in 1902 as the 8th Infantry
  • Mustered into Federal service 30 June 1916 at Springfield; mustered out of Federal service 27 October 1916 at Springfield
  • Mustered into Federal service 3 August 1917; drafted into Federal service 5 August 1917
  • Reorganized and redesignated 1 December 1917 as the 370th Infantry and assigned to the 185th Infantry Brigade
  • (185th Infantry Brigade assigned 5 January 1918 to the 93d Division [Provisional])
  • Relieved 8 May 1918 from assignment to the 185th Infantry Brigade
  • Demobilized 11 March 1919 at Camp Grant, Illinois
  • Reorganized 1919-1921 in the Illinois National Guard as the 8th Infantry; Headquarters Federally recognized 25 August 1921 at Springfield
  • (Location of Headquarters changed 23 July 1929 to Chicago)
  • Converted and redesignated 6 October 1940 as the 184th Field Artillery
  • Inducted into Federal service 6 January 1941 at Chicago
  • Regiment broken up 16 January 1943 and its elements reorganized and redesignated as follows:
  • Headquarters and Headquarters Battery disbanded
  • 1st and 2d Battalions as the 930th and 931st Field Artillery Battalions, respectively
  • After 16 January 1943 the above units underwent changes as follows:
  • Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 184th Field Artillery, reconstituted 25 August 1945 in the Illinois National Guard
  • 930th Field Artillery Battalion converted and redesignated 28 February 1944 as the 1699th Engineer Combat Battalion

    Inactivated 19 June 1945 in Germany

  • 931st Field Artillery Battalion converted and redesignated 20 March 1944 as the 1698th Engineer Combat Battalion

    Inactivated 25 September 1945 in Germany

  • Elements of the former 184th Field Artillery converted, reorganized, and redesignated as the 178th Infantry (organized and Federally recognized 31 March 1947 with Headquarters at Chicago) and the 184th Field Artillery Battalion (organized and Federally recognized 4 April 1946 with Headquarters at Chicago)
  • 178th Infantry reorganized 1 March 1959 as a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System, to consist of the 1st Battle Group; 184th Field Artillery Battalion concurrently reorganized and redesignated as the 184th Artillery, a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System, to consist of the 1st Automatic Weapons Battalion
  • 178th Infantry and 184th Artillery consolidated 1 April 1963 and consolidated unit designated as the 178th Infantry, to consist of the 1st and 2d Battalions
  • Reorganized 1 December 1965 to consist of the 1st Battalion, an element of the 33d Infantry Division, and the 2d Battalion
  • Reorganized 1 February 1968 to consist of the 1st Battalion, an element of the 33d Infantry Brigade
  • (1st Battalion ordered into active Federal service 7 April 1968 at home stations; released 11 April 1968 from active Federal service and reverted to state control)
  • Withdrawn 5 February 1987 from the Combat Arms Regimental System and reorganized under the United States Army Regimental System
  • Reorganized 1 September 1996 to consist of the 1st Battalion, an element of the 34th Infantry Division
  • Reorganized 1 October 1997 to consist of the 1st Battalion, an element of the 35th Infantry Division
  • Ordered into active Federal service 4 January 2002 at home stations; released from active Federal service 4-18 September 2002 and reverted to state control
  • Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 178th Infantry Regiment
  • Reorganized 1 September 2006 to consist of the 1st Battalion, an element of the 33d Infantry Brigade Combat Team
  • Ordered into active Federal service 21 August 2008 at home stations; released from active Federal service 24 September 2009 and reverted to state control
