- Organized and Federally recognized 2 August 1921 and 9 February 1938 in the Iowa National Guard at Des Moines as Company C and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 168th Infantry, respectively, elements of the 34th Division (later redesignated as the 34th Infantry Division)
- Inducted into Federal service 10 February 1941 at Des Moines
- Inactivated 3 November 1945 at Camp Patrick Henry, Virginia
- Consolidated 19 June 1946 to form Headquarters Company, 34th Infantry Division
- Reorganized and Federally recognized 6 March 1947 in the Iowa National Guard at Des Moines
- Consolidated 1 March 1963 with the 34th Administration Company (organized and Federally recognized 1 March 1955 at Des Moines) and consolidated unit reorganized and redesignated as Headquarters Company, 34th Command Headquarters, Divisional
- (Personnel transferred 1 January 1968 to Headquarters Company, Emergency Operations, Headquarters, Iowa Army National Guard; transferred 1 May 1971 to the 34th Support Center)
- Location of 34th Support Center changed 1 June 1983 to Johnston
- Expanded 1 March 1992 to form the 34th and 185th Support Centers
- Consolidated 1 September 1995 and consolidated unit designated as the 185th Support Center
- Converted, reorganized, and redesignated 1 October 1996 as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 734th Maintenance Battalion
- Converted, reorganized, and redesignated 1 April 2006 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 734th Support Group
- Ordered into active Federal service 28 June 2010 at Johnston; released from active Federal service 1 August 2011 and reverted to state control
