  • Organized in February 1918 at Camp Dix, New Jersey, as the 53d Engineers Railway Operation Battalion
  • Converted and redesignated 7 September 1918 as the 53d Regiment, Transportation Corps
  • Demobilized 12 November 1918 in France
  • Reconstituted 18 October 1927 in the Regular Army as the 53d Engineer Railway Battalion
  • Redesignated 23 September 1933 as the 53d Engineer Battalion
  • Redesignated 21 February 1941 as the 718th Engineer Battalion
  • Redesignated 1 April 1942 as the 718th Engineer Railway Operating Battalion
  • Converted and redesignated 16 November 1942 as the 718th Railway Operating Battalion, Transportation Corps
  • Ordered into active military service 7 December 1943 and organized
  • 14 December 1943 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas
  • Inactivated 4 December 1945 at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey
  • Redesignated 12 October 1948 as the 718th Transportation Railway Operating Battalion; concurrently withdrawn from the Regular Army and allotted to the Organized Reserve Corps
  • Activated 22 October 1948 at Springfield, Ohio
  • Inactivated 2 November 1951 at Springfield, Ohio
  • (Organized Reserve Corps redesignated 9 July 1952 as the Army Reserve)
  • Redesignated 13 February 1959 as the 718th Transportation Battalion
  • Activated 3 April 1959 with Headquarters at Columbus, Ohio
  • Headquarters and Headquarters Company reorganized and redesignated 7 January 1963 as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 718th Transportation Battalion; remainder of battalion disbanded 15 January 1963
  • Ordered into active military service 31 October 2010 at Columbus, Ohio; released from active military service 4 December 2011 and reverted to reserve status
