H. Allen Skinner’s The War in the Carolinas and Georgia, 1781–1782, covers the engagements against British and loyalist forces in the South during the closing years of the conflict. In early 1781, the British had the upper hand across much of the South. The British army had seized major coastal cities, including Savannah, Georgia, in December 1778 and Charleston, South Carolina, in May 1780, and patriot and loyalist militias had plunged the countryside into civil war. Even though patriot forces had achieved victory over loyalist opponents in the Battle of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, in October 1780, the American position was in a critical state. With the arrival of Maj. Gen. Nathanael Greene as the Continental Army’s commander in the Southern Department, the American forces strove to regain popular support and to build discipline and order among their ranks. The major engagements covered in this volume, including the Battles of Cowpens, Ninety Six, and Eutaw Springs, showcase the American forces’ setbacks and ultimate success in this key theater of the war.
