APPENDIX D

Statistics

This study of the Soldier-Statesmen of the Constitution grew out of a mass of biographical data gathered on more than a thousand men who served in various prominent positions in the federal and state governments between 1775 and 1815. This data provided the statistical evidence undergirding the thesis of the book: that a significant percentage of the nation's political leadership during the first generation of the new republic were veterans of the Revolutionary War. It also provided the raw material for a statistical comparison of veteran and nonveteran strength in government. The tables and charts that follow are based on this material and are meant to illustrate for the general reader the changes and trends in the percentage of veterans in government throughout the Constitutional generation with special emphasis on those who signed the Constitution. They are followed by a roster of some 400 veterans who served in senior positions in the federal executive, legislative, and judicial branches and as state governors before 1815. It should be noted that this roster lists only service in the Revolution. In fact many of these veterans also saw service in the French and Indian War or in later military action on the frontier or against the British in the War of 1812.
