86 Oscoda was a subbase of Selfridge Field, at which most of these troops were stationed when, a few weeks before, on 5 May, the post commander, having ordered his car to base headquarters in the early morning hours, shot the Negro driver assigned to it on sight and without provocation. The protest itself was not unprecedented. In the Springfield Riots of 1908, units of the 8th Illinois, prepared to answer the governor's call for riot duty, protested that the use of white National Guardsmen only worked a specific hardship on the Negro citizens of Springfield which could have been avoided by the use of the Negro units as well.
