1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment

  • Constituted 2 February 1901 in the Regular Army as Troop A, 12th Cavalry
  • Organized 25 March 1901 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas
  • (12th Cavalry assigned 24 March 1923 to the 2d Cavalry Division; relieved 3 January 1933 from assignment to the 2d Cavalry Division and assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division; dismounted 28 February 1943 and reorganized 4 December 1943 partly under cavalry and partly under infantry tables of organization and equipment; reorganized wholly as infantry 20 July 1945 but retained cavalry designations)
  • Inactivated 25 March 1949 in Japan and relieved from assignment to the 1st Cavalry Division
  • Consolidated 15 February 1957 with the Headquarters and Headquarters and Service Company, 81st Reconnaissance Battalion (active), and consolidated unit redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Reconnaissance Squadron, 12th Cavalry, assigned to the 1st Armored Division, and reorganized at Fort Polk, Louisiana (Companies A, B, C, and D, 81st Reconnaissance Battalion concurrently redesignated at Troops A, B, C, and D, 1st Reconnaissance Squadron, 12th Cavalry)
  • (Troops C and D, 1st Reconnaissance Squadron, 12th Cavalry, inactivated 23 December 1957)
  • Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Reconnaissance Squadron, 12th Cavalry, reorganized and redesignated 20 April 1959 as Troop A, 12th Cavalry (Troops A and B, 1st Reconnaissance Squadron, 12th Cavalry, concurrently inactivated)
  • Inactivated 3 February 1962 at Fort Hood, Texas, and relieved from assignment to the 1st Armored Division
  • Redesignated 15 July 1963 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry, and assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division (organic troops concurrently redesignated as companies)
  • Battalion activated 1 September 1963 in Korea
  • Inactivated 15 June 1983 at Fort Hood, Texas, and relieved from assignment to the 1st Cavalry Division
  • Headquarters transferred 30 May 1986 to the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command and activated at Fort Knox, Kentucky
  • Headquarters withdrawn 7 December 1992 from the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command and inactivated at Fort Knox, Kentucky; former 81st Reconnaissance Battalion concurrently withdrawn from the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry, and consolidated with the 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry - hereafter separate lineage
  • Assigned 16 December 1992 to the 1st Cavalry Division and activated at Fort Hood, Texas (organic elements concurrently constituted and activated)
  • Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment
  • Relieved 17 October 2005 from assignment to the 1st Cavalry Division and assigned to 3d Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division
