Constituted 2 February 1901 in the Regular Army as the 15th Cavalry

Organized 12 February 1901 at the Presidio of San Francisco, California

Assigned in December 1917 to the 15th Cavalry Division

Relieved 11 May 1918 from assignment to the 15th Cavalry Division

Inactivated 18 October 1921 at Fort D.A. Russell, Wyoming

Redesignated 22 March 1942 as the 15th Cavalry, Mechanized, and activated at Fort Riley, Kansas

Regiment broken up 12 March 1944 and its elements reorganized and redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 15th Cavalry Group, Mechanized; and the 15th and 17th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadrons, Mechanized

After 12 March 1944, the above units underwent the following changes:

    Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 15th Cavalry Group, Mechanized, converted and redesignated 1 May 1946 as Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 15th Constabulary Regiment Reorganized and redesignated 2 February 1948 as Headquarters and Headquarters and Service Troop, 15th Constabulary Regiment Inactivated 20 December 1948 in Germany Converted and redesignated 23 October 1950 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 15th Armored Cavalry Group Activated 15 November 1950 at Camp Polk, Louisiana Redesignated 25 September 1953 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 15th Armor Group Inactivated 1 December 1955 at Fort Knox, Kentucky

    15th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, Mechanized (less Troop E), converted and redesignated 1 May 1946 as the 15th Constabulary Squadron and assigned to the 15th Constabulary Regiment Inactivated 20 December 1948 in Germany and relieved from assignment to the 15th Constabulary Regiment Activated 20 May 1949 in Germany Inactivated 15 December 1952 in Germany Converted and redesignated 13 August 1954 as the 15th Reconnaissance Battalion

    Troop E, 15th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, Mechanized, converted and redesignated 1 May 1946 as the Light Tank Troop, 15th Constabulary Regiment Inactivated 28 February 1947 in Germany Disbanded 25 February 1953 Reconstituted 14 August 1954 in the Regular Army as Troop L, 15th Cavalry

    17th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, Mechanized, inactivated 20 January 1947 in Germany Redesignated (less Company F) 1 September 1948 as the 501st Reconnaissance Battalion Activated 25 September 1948 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma Inactivated 25 January 1949 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma

    Company F, 17th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, Mechanized, redesignated 1 September 1948 as the 550th Light Tank Company Redesignated 19 March 1951 as the 550th Tank Company Activated 6 April 1951 at Fort Benning, Georgia Inactivated 25 June 1958 at Fort Campbell, Kentucky Redesignated 1 October 1958 as Troop F, 15th Cavalry

Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 15th Armor Group; 15th and 501st Reconnaissance Battalions; and Troops F and L, 15th Cavalry, consolidated, reorganized and redesignated 1 April 1957 to 1 May 1959 as the 15th Cavalry, a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System

Redesignated 1 July 1963 as the 15th Armor

Redesignated 1 July 1967 as the 15th Cavalry

Withdrawn 25 March 1987 from the Combat Arms Regimental System, reorganized under the United States Army Regimental System, and transferred to the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command
