17th Cavalry Lineage
Constituted 1 July 1916 in the Regular Army as the 17th Cavalry and organized at Fort Bliss, Texas
Inactivated 26 September 1921 at the Presidio of Monterey, California
Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 17th Cavalry, redesignated 9 March 1951 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 17th Armored Cavalry Group; concurrently consolidated with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 17th Armored Group (see ANNEX), and consolidated unit designated as the 17th Armored Cavalry Group (remainder of the 17th Cavalry Regiment concurrently disbanded)
After 9 March 1951 the above units underwent the following changes:
Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 17th Armored Cavalry
Group, activated 20 March 1951 at Camp Polk, Louisiana
Reorganized and redesignated 25 September 1953 as Headquarters and Headquarters
Company, 17th Armor Group
Inactivated 4 May 1959 at Fort Stewart, Georgia, and redesignated as Headquarters
and Headquarters Troop, 17th Cavalry
Troops A - M, 17th Cavalry, reconstituted 1 March 1957 - 4 May 1959 in the Regular Army
Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 17th Cavalry, and the reconstituted troops of the 17th Cavalry, consolidated, reorganized and redesignated 4 May 1959 as the 17th Cavalry, a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System
Withdrawn 16 July 1987 from the Combat Arms Regimental System and reorganized under the United States Army Regimental System
