37th Armor Lineage
Constituted 13 January 1941 in the Regular Army as the 7th Armored Regiment and assigned to the 4th Armored Division
Activated 15 April 1941 at Pine Camp, New York
Redesignated 8 May 1941 as the 37th Armored Regiment
Regiment broken up 10 September 1943 and its elements reorganized and redesignated as follows:
Regimental Headquarters and Headquarters Company and the 1st and 2d Battalions as the 37th Tank Battalion, and remained assigned to the 4th Armored Division
3d Battalion as the 706th Tank Battalion and relieved from assignment to the 4th Armored Division
Maintenance and Service Companies disbanded
(Reconnaissance Company as Troop F, 25th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, Mechanized - hereafter separate lineage)
After 10 September 1943 the above units underwent changes as follows:
37th Tank Battalion relieved 1 May 1946 from assignment to
the 4th Armored Division; concurrently converted and redesignated as the 37th
Constabulary Squadron and assigned to the 3d Constabulary Regiment
Inactivated 20 September 1947 in Germany and relieved from assignment to the
3d Constabulary Regiment
Converted and redesignated 11 December 1951 as the 37th Tank Battalion
Assigned 25 February 1953 to the 4th Armored Division
Activated 15 June 1954 at Fort Hood, Texas
Inactivated 1 April 1957 at Fort Hood, Texas, and relieved from assignment to
the
4th Armored Division
706th Tank Battalion inactivated 20 September 1946 in the
Philippine Islands
Redesignated 25 March 1949 as the 71st Heavy Tank Battalion, assigned to the
1st Cavalry Division, and activated in Japan
Reorganized and redesignated 5 August 1950 as the 71st Tank Battalion
Inactivated 16 October 1950 in Korea and relieved from assignment to the 1st
Cavalry Division
Redesignated 14 August 1951 as the 706th Tank Battalion
Assigned 25 February 1953 to the 12th Armored Division
Relieved 1 April 1957 from assignment to the 12th Armored Division
37th and 706th Tank Battalions consolidated, reorganized, and redesignated 1 April 1957 as the 37th Armor, a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System
Withdrawn 28 February 1983 from the Combat Arms Regimental System and reorganized under the United States Army Regimental System
