- Organized 2 October 1986 in the Mississippi Army National Guard from existing units as the 323d Aviation Battalion, with Headquarters at Tupelo
- Expanded, reorganized, and redesignated 1 October 1987 as the 185th Aviation, a parent regiment under the United States Army Regimental System, to consist of the 1st Battalion, and Company E
- Reorganized 15 November 1992 in the Mississippi and Washington Army National Guard to consist of the 1st Battalion and Company G
- Reorganized 1 September 1996 in the Mississippi and Washington Army National Guard to consist of the 1st Battalion, and Companies G, H, and K
- Reorganized 16 October 1999 in the Mississippi and Washington Army National Guard to consist of the 1st Battalion, Company E, and Company K
- Reorganized 1 November 2002 in the Mississippi, Michigan, and Puerto Rico Army National Guard to consist of the 1st Battalion, Company G, and Company K
- Reorganized 1 May 2003 in the Mississippi, Michigan, Missouri, and Puerto Rico Army National Guard to consist of the 1st Battalion, Company G, Company I, and Company K
