Organized 15 July 1942 in the Regular Army at Fort Riley, Kansas, as Company E, 9th Armored Engineer Battalion, an element of the 9th Armored Division

Reorganized and redesignated 9 October 1943 as the 993d Engineer Treadway Bridge Company, and relieved from assignment to the 9th Armored Division

Inactivated 20 January 1946 at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey

Redesignated 30 January 1947 as the 546th Engineer Treadway Bridge Company

Redesignated 9 December 1947 as the 48th Engineer Treadway Bridge Company

Redesignated 13 July 1951 as the 38th Engineer Panel Bridge Company

Activated 1 August 1951 at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin

Redesignated 20 August 1954 as the 38th Engineer Company

Inactivated 15 September 2003 in Germany

Assigned 1 June 2006 to the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 2d Infantry Division, and activated at Fort Lewis, Washington
