- 1st Battalion as the 404th Engineer Combat Battalion
- (Headquarters and Headquarters and Service Company, 39th Engineer Combat Regiment as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 39th Engineer Combat Group; 2d Battalion as the 643d Engineer Combat Battalion--hereafter separate lineages)
- 404th Engineer Combat Battalion inactivated 13 October 1945 at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey
- Redesignated 30 January 1947 as the 82d Engineer Combat Battalion
- Redesignated 23 November 1954 as the 82d Engineer Battalion
- Activated 17 January 1955 at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri
- Assigned 16 June 1991 to the 3d Infantry Division
- Relieved 15 February 1996 from assignment to the 3d Infantry Division and assigned to the 1st Infantry Division
- Inactivated 15 July 2006 in Germany, and relieved from assignment to the 1st Infantry Division
- Assigned 17 October 2014 to the 2d Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, and activated at Fort Riley, Kansas
