- Constituted 20 July 1954 in the Air National Guard as the 224th Engineer Aviation Battalion
- Allotted 1 November 1954 to the Iowa Army National Guard
- Organized and Federally recognized 8 March 1955 in southeastern Iowa with Headquarters at Cedar Rapids
- Reorganized and redesignated 15 January 1957 as the 224th Engineer Battalion
- (Location of Headquarters changed 1 January 1968 to Fairfield)
- Ordered into active Federal service 25 January 1991 at home stations; released 21 June 1991 from active Federal service and reverted to state control
- Ordered into active Federal service 13 October 2004 at home stations; released from active Federal service 11 January 2006 and reverted to state control
- Reorganized 1 September 2006 to consist of Headquarters Company, and the Support Company (Companies A, B, and C reorganized as the 831st Engineer Company, the 833d Engineer Company, and the 832d Engineer Company, respectively - hereafter separate lineages)
