  • Constituted 24 October 1917 in the National Army as the 317th Engineer Regiment, an element of the 92d Division
  • Organized 4 November 1917 at Camp Sherman, Ohio
  • Demobilized 31 March 1919 at Camp Sherman, Ohio
  • Reconstituted 5 May 1942 in the Army of the United States as the 317th Engineer Battalion, an element of the 92d Infantry Division
  • Redesignated 1 August 1942 as the 317th Engineer Combat Battalion
  • Activated 15 October 1942 at Fort McClellan, Alabama
  • Inactivated 29 November 1945 at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey
  • Relieved 20 October 1950 from assignment to the 92d Infantry Division and allotted to the Regular Army
  • Activated 1 November 1950 at Fort Campbell, Kentucky
  • Redesignated 5 June 1953 as the 317th Engineer Battalion
  • Assigned in 19 July 1992 to the 24th Infantry Division
  • Relieved 15 February 1996 from assignment to the 24th Infantry Division and assigned to the 3d Infantry Division
  • Inactivated 15 March 2004 at Fort Benning, Georgia, and relieved from assignment to the 3d Infantry Division
  • Assigned 19 September 2015 to 3d Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, and activated at Fort Polk, Louisiana
