  • Constituted 25 February 1943 in the Army of the United States as the 165th Engineer Combat Battalion
  • Activated 5 May 1943 at Camp Van Dorn, Mississippi
  • Inactivated 20 November 1945 at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey
  • Redesignated 16 May 1947 as the 389th Engineer Construction Battalion and allotted to the Organized Reserves
  • Activated 17 July 1947 with Headquarters at Dubuque, Iowa
  • (Organized Reserves redesignated 25 March 1948 as the Organized Reserve Corps; redesignated 9 July 1952 as the Army Reserve)
  • Reorganized and redesignated 1 February 1954 as the 389th Engineer Battalion
  • Ordered into active military service 15 March 2003 at Dubuque, Iowa; released from active military service 13 July 2004 and reverted to reserve status
  • (Lettered companies inactivated 16 September 2008 at Dubuque, Iowa; Support Company concurrently constituted and activated)
