  • Constituted 3 May 1861 in the Regular Army as Company A, 1st Battalion, 11th Infantry
  • Organized in September 1861 at Fort Independence, Massachusetts
  • Reorganized and redesignated 5 December 1866 as Company A, 11th Infantry
  • Consolidated 6 April 1869 with Company A, 34th Infantry (see ANNEX), and consolidated unit redesignated as Company A, 16th Infantry
  • (16th Infantry assigned 8 June 1917 to the 1st Expeditionary Division [later redesignated as the 1st Infantry Division])
  • Reorganized and redesignated 15 February 1957 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battle Group, 16th Infantry, and remained assigned to the 1st Infantry Division (organic elements concurrently constituted and activated)
  • Relieved 13 March 1959 from assignment to the 1st Infantry Division and assigned to the 8th Infantry Division
  • Reorganized and redesignated 1 April 1963 as the 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry
  • Relieved 25 April 1963 from assignment to the 8th Infantry Division and assigned to the 1st Infantry Division
  • Inactivated 15 May 1991 in Germany
  • Activated 16 July 1991 at Fort Riley, Kansas
  • Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment
  • Relieved 16 September 2009 from assignment to the 1st Infantry Division, and assigned to the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division
