- Redesignated 12 May 1942 as the 87th Mountain Infantry
- Regiment (less 1st Battalion) activated 25 May 1942 at Fort Lewis, Washington
- Reorganized and redesignated 22 February 1944 as the 87th Infantry and assigned to the 10th Light Division
- Reorganized and redesignated 6 November 1944 as the 87th Mountain Infantry (10th Light Division concurrently redesignated as the 10th Mountain Division)
- Inactivated 21 November 1945 at Camp Carson, Colorado
- Redesignated 18 June 1948 as the 87th Infantry (10th Mountain Division concurrently redesignated as the 10th Infantry Division)
- Allotted 25 June 1948 to the Regular Army
- Activated 1 July 1948 at Fort Riley, Kansas
- Relieved 1 July 1957 from assignment to the 10th Infantry Division and reorganized as a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System
- Withdrawn 2 May 1988 from the Combat Arms Regimental System and reorganized under the United States Army Regimental System
- Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 87th Infantry Regiment
