  • Organized 24 December 1857 and 4 January 1858 at Saginaw and Flint, respectively, as the East Saginaw Guards and Flint Union Grays, two independent volunteer militia companies
  • Consolidated and expanded 25 April 1861 to form the 2d Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment
  • Mustered into Federal service 25 May 1861 at Detroit
  • Reorganized and redesignated in January 1864 as the 2d Michigan Veteran Infantry Regiment
  • Mustered out of Federal service 29 July 1865 in the District of Columbia
  • Reorganized 1872-1874 in the Michigan State Troops as independent companies
  • Reorganized 6 July 1874 as elements of the 2d Infantry Regiment
  • Companies in the Saginaw and Flint area withdrawn 19 May 1876 from the 2d Infantry Regiment and consolidated with elements of the 1st Infantry Regiment at Detroit to form the 3d Infantry Regiment (2d Infantry – hereafter separate lineage)
  • (Detroit companies withdrawn 1 May 1882 and reorganized as the 1st Separate Battalion of Infantry --hereafter separate lineage)
  • (Michigan State Troops redesignated 31 December 1894 as the Michigan National Guard)
  • 3d Infantry Regiment mustered into Federal service 13-20 May 1898 at Island Lake as the 33d Michigan Volunteer Infantry; mustered out of Federal service 9 November 1898 - 6 January 1899 at home stations
  • Reorganized 10 July 1899 in the Michigan National Guard as the 3d Infantry
  • Redesignated 22 April 1915 as the 33d Infantry
  • Mustered into Federal service 19 June 1916; drafted into Federal service 5 August 1917
  • Consolidated 30 September 1917 with the 1st Battalion, 31st Infantry (organized 1830-1831 in Michigan); and consolidated unit concurrently reorganized and redesignated as the 125th Infantry and assigned to the 32d Division
  • Demobilized 22 May 1919 at Camp Custer, Michigan
  • Reorganized 1921-1922 in the Michigan National Guard as the 125th Infantry and assigned to the 32d Division; Headquarters Federally recognized 26 January 1922 at Flint

  • Relieved 8 December 1941 from assignment to the 32d Division

  • Assigned 31 May 1946 to the 46th Infantry Division (1st Battalion [formerly the 1st Battalion, 31st Infantry] concurrently withdrawn and reorganized as the 425th Infantry-­hereafter separate lineage)
  • Reorganized 15 March 1959 as a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System to consist of the 1st and 2d Battle Groups, elements of the 46th Infantry Division
  • Reorganized 1 March 1963 to consist of the 1st and 2d Battalions
  • (1st and 2d Battalions ordered into active Federal service 24 July 1967 at home stations; released 2 August 1967 from active Federal service and reverted to state control)
  • Reorganized 1 February 1968 to consist of the 1st Battalion, an element of the 38th Infantry Division
  • Withdrawn 20 February 1987 from the Combat Arms Regimental System and reorganized under the United States Army Regimental System with Headquarters at Flint

  • Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 125th Infantry Regiment, to consist of the 1st Battalion, an element of the 38th Infantry Division
