  • Organized in 1864 in the California Militia at Sacramento as the Sacramento Light Artillery
  • (Organized Militia of California redesignated 2 April 1866 as the California National Guard)
  • Consolidated 19 March 1880 with the 1st Infantry Battalion (organized 15 March 1872 in the California National Guard as the 4th Infantry Regiment, with Headquarters at Sacramento; reorganized and redesignated 1875-1877 as the 1st Infantry Battalion) and consolidated unit reorganized and redesignated as the 1st Artillery Regiment, with Headquarters at Sacramento
  • Consolidated 9 December 1895 with the 8th Infantry Regiment (organized 15 February 1890 in the California National Guard as the 8th Infantry Battalion, with Headquarters at Chico; expanded, and redesignated 31 October 1891 as the 8th Infantry Regiment), and consolidated unit redesignated as the 2d Infantry Regiment, with Headquarters at Sacramento
  • (Three companies mustered into Federal service 6-9 July 1898 at Fruitvale as elements of the 8th California Volunteer Infantry; mustered out of Federal service 28 January – 6 February 1899 in Washington and California)
  • Consolidated 11 May 1907 with the 6th Infantry Regiment (organized 22 July 1885 in the California National Guard as the 6th Infantry Battalion) and consolidated unit designated as the 2d Infantry Regiment, with Headquarters at Sacramento
  • Mustered into Federal service 27 June 1916 at Sacramento; mustered out of Federal service 15 November 1916
  • Drafted into Federal service 5 August 1917
  • Regiment (less 2d Battalion, Companies L and M, and Sanitary Detachment) consolidated 24 September - 1 November 1917 with the 5th Infantry Regiment, California National Guard; consolidated unit reorganized and redesignated as the 159th Infantry and assigned to the 40th Division (2d Battalion, Companies L and M, and Sanitary Detachment, 2d Infantry Regiment, consolidated 25 September - 1 November 1917 with the 7th Infantry Regiment, California National Guard; consolidated unit reorganized and redesignated as the 160th Infantry and assigned to the 40th Division)
  • 159th Infantry demobilized 1 May 1919 at the Presidio of San Francisco, California; 160th Infantry demobilized 7 May 1919 at Camp Kearney, California
  • Former central and northern California (less San Francisco area) elements reorganized 20 October 1924 in the California National Guard as the 184th Infantry, with Headquarters at Sacramento, and assigned to the 40th Division
  • (Central California [less San Francisco area] elements withdrawn, expanded, reorganized, and redesignated 18 February - 1 April 1929 as the 185th Infantry - hereafter separate lineage)
  • 184th Infantry inducted into Federal service 3 March 1941 at home stations
  • (40th Division redesignated 5 February 1942 as the 40th Infantry Division)
  • Released 23 August 1943 from assignment to the 40th Infantry Division and assigned to the 7th Infantry Division
  • Inactivated 20 January 1946 in Korea
  • Relieved 5 August 1946 from assignment to the 7th Infantry Division and assigned to the 49th Infantry Division
  • Reorganized and Federally recognized 10 October 1946 with Headquarters at Sacramento
  • Reorganized 1 May 1959 as a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System to consist of the 1st and 2d Battle Groups, elements of the 49th Infantry Division
  • Reorganized 1 March 1963 to consist of the 1st and 2d Battalions, elements of the 49th Infantry Division
  • Reorganized 4 December 1965 to consist of the 1st Battalion, an element of the 49th Infantry Brigade, and the 2d Battalion, an element of the 49th Infantry Division
  • Reorganized 29 January 1968 to consist of the 1st Battalion, an element of the 49th Infantry Brigade
  • Reorganized 1 November 1976 to consist of the 1st Battalion, an element of the 40th Infantry Division
  • Withdrawn 19 January 1988 from the Combat Arms Regimental System and reorganized under the United States Army Regimental System
  • (1st Battalion ordered into active Federal service 2 May 1992 at home stations; released 9 May 1992 from active Federal service and reverted to state control)
  • Reorganized 1 September 1995 to consist of the 1st Battalion, an element of the 29th Infantry Brigade
  • Ordered into active Federal service 16 August 2004 at home stations
  • Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 184th Infantry Regiment
  • Released 11 February 2006 from active Federal service and reverted to state control
  • Relieved 1 September 2007 from assignment to the 29th Infantry Brigade and assigned to the 40th Infantry Brigade Combat Team
  • Ordered into active Federal service 16 August 2008 at home stations
  • (Headquarters, 40th Infantry Brigade Combat Team redesignated 1 September 2008 as Headquarters, 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team)
  • Released from active Federal service 19 September 2009 and reverted to state control
