- Constituted 5 January 1968 in the Regular Army as the 40th Psychological Operations Detachment and activated at Fort Bragg, North Carolina
- Inactivated 1 December 1969 in Vietnam
- Redesignated 16 June 1996 as the 140th Psychological Operations Detachment
- Redesignated 18 September 2006 as the 340th Psychological Operations Company; concurrently withdrawn from the Regular Army and allotted to the Army Reserve
- Activated 17 September 2009 at Garner, North Carolina
- Ordered into active military service 26 October and 12 November 2011 at Garner, North Carolina; released from active military service 28 November and 15 December 2012 and reverted to reserve status
- Detachment ordered into active military service 26 April 2018 at Garner, North Carolina; released from active military service 4 April 2019 and reverted to reserve status
