Constituted 23 July 1918 in the National Army as Headquarters, 173d Field Artillery Brigade, and assigned to the 95th Division

Demobilized 30 November 1918

Reconstituted 24 June 1921 in the Organized Reserves as Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 173d Field Artillery Brigade, and assigned to the 98th Division

Organized in January 1922 at Syracuse, New York

Reorganized and redesignated 20 February 1942 as Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 98th Division Artillery

Ordered into active military service 15 September 1942 and reorganized at Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky, as Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 98th Infantry Division Artillery

Inactivated 16 February 1946 in Japan

Activated 19 December 1946 in the Organized Reserves at Syracuse, New York

(Organized Reserves redesignated 25 March 1948 as the Organized Reserve Corps; redesignated 9 July 1952 as the Army Reserve)

Reorganized and redesignated 1 May 1959 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 98th Regiment, an element of the 98th Division (Training), and location changed to Tonawanda, New York (organic elements concurrently organized as new units) 

(Location of Headquarters changed 22 July 1962 to Swormville, New York)

Regiment reorganized 31 January 1968 to consist of the 1st and 2d Battalions, elements of the 98th Division (Training)

Reorganized 1 June 1971 to consist of the 1st, 2d, and 3d Battalions, elements of the 98th Division (Training)

Reorganized 20 October 1991 to consist of the 1st, 2d, 3d, and 4th Battalions, elements of the 98th Division (Training)

Reorganized 1 October 1994 to consist of the 1st, 2d, 3d, and 4th Battalions, elements of the 98th Division (Institutional Training)

Reorganized 13 January 1995 to consist of the 1st, 2d, and 4th Battalions, elements of the 98th Division (Institutional Training)

Reorganized 16 October - 16 November 1996 to consist of the 1st, 2d, 3d, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th Battalions, elements of the 98th Division (Institutional Training)

Elements ordered into active military service in support of the War on Terrorism

Reorganized 15 September 2006 to consist of the 1st, 2d, 3d, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th Battalions, elements of the 98th Division (Institutional Training)

(12th and 13th Battalions relieved 1 October 2006 from assignment to the 98th Division [Institutional Training])

(Remaining battalions relieved 1 October 2007 from assignment to the 98th Division [Institutional Training])

Reorganized 15 April - 1 December 2008 to consist of the 5th, 6th, and 11th Battalions elements of the 100th Training Division, and the 7th and 8th Battalions, elements of the 94th Training Division
