  • Constituted 24 December 1942 in the Army of the United States as the 291st Infantry and assigned to the 75th Infantry Division
  • Activated 15 April 1943 at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri
  • Inactivated 26 November 1945 at the New York Port of Embarkation
  • Allotted 21 February 1952 to the Organized Reserve Corps
  • Relieved 1 March 1952 from assignment to the 75th Infantry Division and assigned to the 95th Infantry Division
  • Activated 15 April 1952 with Headquarters at Tulsa, Oklahoma
  • (Organized Reserve Corps redesignated 9 July 1952 as the Army Reserve)
  • Relieved 1 January 1955 from assignment to the 95th Infantry Division and assigned to the 75th Infantry Division
  • Inactivated 31 January 1955 at Tulsa, Oklahoma
  • Relieved 2 March 1959 from assignment to the 75th Infantry Division and redesignated as the 291st Regiment
  • Activated 1 April 1959 as an element of the 95th Division (Training) with Headquarters at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
  • Reorganized 30 December 1967 to consist of the 1st, 2d, and 3d Battalions, elements of the 95th Division (Training)
  • Reorganized 16 October 1978 to consist of the 1st, 2d, 3d, and 4th Battalions, elements of the 95th Division (Training)
  • Reorganized 13 January 1995 to consist of the 1st and 3d Battalions, elements of the 95th Division (Training)
  • Reorganized 16 October 1996 to consist of the 1st Battalion, an element of the 95th Division (Training)
  • 1st Battalion inactivated 15 April 1997 and relieved from assignment to the 95th Division (Training)
  • 291st Regiment reorganized 17 October 1999 to consist of the 1st, 2d, and 3d Battalions, elements of the 75th Division (Training Support); 1st, 2d, and 3d Battalions concurrently allotted to the Regular Army
  • Regiment reorganized 1 December 2006 as a parent regiment under the United States Army Regimental System; concurrently 1st, 2d, and 3d Battalions relieved from assignment to the 75th Division (Training Support)
  • Reorganized 1 October 2012 to consist of the 1st and 2d Battalions
