309th Regiment

  • Constituted 5 August 1917 in the National Army as the 309th Infantry and assigned to the 78th Division
  • Organized 29 August 1917 at Camp Dix, New Jersey
  • Demobilized 30 May - 6 June 1919 at Camp Dix, New Jersey, and Camp Upton, New York
  • Reconstituted 24 June 1921 in the Organized Reserves as the 309th Infantry and assigned to the 78th Division (later redesignated as the 78th Infantry Division)
  • Organized in November 1921 with Headquarters at Camden, New Jersey
  • Ordered into active military service 15 August 1942 and reorganized at Camp Butner, North Carolina
  • Inactivated 22 May 1946 in Germany
  • Activated 17 December 1946 in the Organized Reserves with Headquarters at Camden, New Jersey
  • (Organized Reserves redesignated 25 March 1948 as the Organized Reserve Corps; redesignated 9 July 1952 as the Army Reserve)
  • (Location of Headquarters changed 1 December 1951 to Trenton, New Jersey; changed 15 April 1958 to Fort Monmouth, New Jersey)
  • Reorganized and redesignated 1 May 1959 as the 309th Regiment, an element of the 78th Division (Training), with Headquarters at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey
  • Reorganized 31 January 1968 to consist of the 1st, 2d, and 3d Battalions, elements of the 78th Division (Training)
  • (3d Battalion ordered into active military service 25 January 1991 at Northfield, New Jersey; released from active military service 31 March 1991 and reverted to reserve status)
  • Reorganized 1 October 1993 to consist of the 1st, 2d, and 3d Battalions, elements of the 78th Division (Exercise)
  • Reorganized 17 October 1999 to consist of the 1st, 2d, and 3d Battalions, elements of the 78th Division (Training Support)
  • Elements ordered into active military service in support of the War on Terrorism
  • Regiment reorganized 1 April 2007 as a parent regiment under the United States Army Regimental System; concurrently 1st, 2d, and 3d Battalions relieved from assignment to the 78th Division (Training Support)
