Constituted 5 August 1917 in the National Army as the 356th Infantry and assigned to the 89th Division

Organized 27 August 1917 at Camp Funston, Kansas

Demobilized 11 June 1919 at Camp Funston, Kansas

Reconstituted 24 June 1921 in the Organized Reserves as the 356th Infantry and assigned to the 89th Division

Organized in November 1921 with Headquarters at Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Relieved 22 February 1942 from assignment to the 89th Division; concurrently withdrawn from the Organized Reserves and allotted to the Army of the United States as an inactive unit

Disbanded 11 November 1944

Reconstituted 12 June 1959 in the Army Reserve as the 356th Regiment

Activated 1 October 1959 as an element of the 89th Division (Training) with Headquarters at Wichita, Kansas

Reorganized 31 January 1968 to consist of the 1st, 2d, and 3d Battalions, elements of the 89th Division (Training)

Reorganized 31 January 1971 to consist of the 2d and 3d Battalions, elements of the 89th Division (Training)

Reorganized 1 May 1971 to consist of the 1st, 2d, and 3d Battalions, elements of the 89th Division (Training)

Reorganized 1 March 1974 to consist of the 3d Battalion, an element of the 89th Division (Training)

3d Battalion inactivated 1 February 1975 and relieved from assignment to the 89th Division (Training)

356th Regiment reorganized 17 October 1999 to consist of the 1st, 2d, and 3d Battalions, elements of the 91st Division (Training Support)
