Constituted 23 July 1918 in the National Army as the 397th Infantry and assigned to the 100th Division

Demobilized 30 November 1918

Reconstituted 24 June 1921 in the Organized Reserves as the 397th Infantry and assigned to the 100th Division (later redesignated as the 100th Infantry Division)

Organized in December 1921 with Headquarters at Clarksburg, West Virginia

Ordered into active military service 15 November 1942 and reorganized at Fort Jackson, South Carolina

Inactivated 10 January 1946 at Camp Patrick Henry, Virginia

Redesignated 15 October 1946 as the 397th Parachute Infantry, an element of the 100th Airborne Division

Activated 2 December 1946 with Headquarters at Lexington, Kentucky

(Organized Reserves redesignated 25 March 1948 as the Organized Reserve Corps; redesignated 9 July 1952 as the Army Reserve)

Reorganized and redesignated 31 August 1950 as the 397th Airborne Infantry

Reorganized and redesignated 12 May 1952 as the 397th Infantry, an element of the 100th Infantry Division

Reorganized and redesignated 17 April 1959 as the 397th Regiment, an element of the 100th Division (Training), with Headquarters at Lexington, Kentucky

Ordered into active military service 25 September 1961 at Lexington, Kentucky; released from active military service in August 1962 and reverted to reserve status

Reorganized 26 January 1968 to consist of the 1st, 2d, and 3d Battalions, elements of the 100th Division (Training)

Reorganized 16 October 1978 to consist of the 1st, 2d, 3d, and 4th Battalions, elements of the 100th Division (Training)

Reorganized 17 November 1982 to consist of the 1st, 2d, and 3d Battalions, elements of the 100th Division (Training)

(2d Battalion ordered into active military service 22 January 1991 at Lebanon, Kentucky; released from active military service 21 March 1991 and reverted to reserve status)

Reorganized 1 October 1994 to consist of the 1st, 2d, and 3d Battalions, elements of the 100th Division (Institutional Training)

Reorganized 13 January 1995 to consist of the 1st and 3d Battalions, elements of the 100th Division (Institutional Training)
