- Organized 1 January 1889 in the North Carolina State Guard at Concord as Company G (Carbarrus Black Boys), 4th Regiment of Infantry
- Mustered into Federal service 3-11 May 1898 at Raleigh as Company L, 1st North Carolina Volunteer Infantry; mustered out of Federal service 22 April 1899 at Savannah, Georgia, and resumed state status as Company L (Carbarrus Black Boys), 1st Regiment of Infantry
- (North Carolina State Guard redesignated in 1903 as the North Carolina National Guard)
- Mustered into Federal service 19 June 1916; mustered out of Federal service 12-17 February 1917
- Drafted into Federal service 5 August 1917
- Company broken up 12 September 1917 with personnel being transferred to various elements in the 30th Division
- 30th Division demobilized 7 May 1919 at Camp Jackson, South Carolina
- Reorganized and Federally recognized 19 November 1920 in the North Carolina Army National Guard at Concord as Company E, 1st Infantry Regiment
- Redesignated 8 November 1921 as Company E, 120th Infantry, an element of the 30th Division (later redesignated as the 30th Infantry Division)
- Inducted into Federal service 16 September 1940 at Concord
- Inactivated 24 November 1945 at Camp Jackson, South Carolina
- Reorganized and Federally recognized 13 March 1947 at Concord
- Reorganized and redesignated 1 April 1959 as Headquarters Company, 3d Battle Group, 120th Infantry, an element of the 30th Infantry Division
- Converted and redesignated 10 March 1963 as Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 196th Cavalry, an element of the 30th Infantry Division
- Converted and redesignated 1 December 1973 as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 196th Transportation Battalion, and relieved from assignment to the 30th Infantry Division
- Consolidated 1 September 1980 with the 1454th Transportation Company (organized and Federally recognized 1 May 1971) and consolidated unit designated as the 1454th Transportation Company
- Ordered into active Federal service 20 September 1990 at Concord; released 6 May 1991 from active Federal service and reverted to state control
- Ordered into active Federal service 11 September 1997 at Concord; released 7 June 1998 from active Federal service and reverted to state control
- Ordered into active Federal service 16 January 2003 at Concord; released from active Federal service 20 April 2004 and reverted to state control
- Ordered into active Federal service 11 February 2009 at Concord; released from active Federal service 17 March 2010 and reverted to state control
