About the Exhibit
The award-winning exhibit “This We'll Defend: Celebrating 250 Years of Army History” presents an immersive,
18th-century-style tavern modeled after the Wayside Inn in Sudbury, Massachusetts. Taverns played a crucial
role in establishing the colonial resistance. These “publick houses” functioned as civic centers, hosting
court sessions, militia musters, town meetings, and spirited public debates.
Audiences move through the exhibition into an area crafted with the ambiance of the Assembly Room in
Philadelphia’s Independence Hall. This room displays a staff-curated exhibition with objects hand-selected
by members of the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center team. Each object reflects personal connections to
the Army’s story and highlights the passion the team brings to preserving history.
The U.S. Army Motto
“This We’ll Defend,” dates to the founding of the Continental Army in 1775. The motto appears on the original
War Office Seal, which was created during the American Revolution and later became the basis for the
Department of the Army's official emblem.
"This We'll Defend" encapsulates the Army's commitment to safeguarding American values, sovereignty, and
citizens. It is more than a slogan. It is a solemn oath taken by every Soldier, rooted in centuries of
service.

In 2026, the exhibit earned both the PA Museums’ Institutional Achievement Award and The Society for Military
History’s Public History Award.
