Staff Sergeant Carl "Eugene" Snyder is a native of Baltimore, Maryland. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1989. He completed both Basic Combat Training and Infantry Advanced Individual Training (11B) at Fort Benning, Georgia.   

SSG Snyder's first duty assignment was with 4th/15th Infantry Battalion, 194th Armor Brigade, Fort Knox, Kentucky, where he served as a mechanized infantryman, commander's M113 driver, and 1SG's HMMWV driver. In 1991, SSG Snyder reenlisted as a Multimedia Illustrator (25M) and attended Multimedia Illustrator Advanced Individual Training at Lowry Air Force Base, Colorado. SSG Snyder's second assignment was with 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), Fort Myer, Virginia, where he served as graphics NCOIC. After two years with the Old Guard, he was assigned to the U.S. Army Center of Military History where he served as an Artist-in-Residence. His fourth and final assignment was with the Defense Information School where he served as a Multimedia Illustration Instructor.

SSG Snyder's military and civilian education includes the Instructor's Training Course – Defense Information School; Basic Non-Commissioned Officer's Course (BNCOC); Air Assault Course; Multimedia Illustrator Advanced Individual Training (AIT); Primary Leadership Development Course (PLDC); Infantry Advanced Individual Training (AIT); Basic Combat Training. He earned a bachelor's degree in studio art and art history from Vermont College, Norwich University.

SSG Snyder's awards and decorations include the Joint Service Commendation Medal; Army Commendation Medal (2OLC); Army Achievement Medal (2OLC); Meritorious Unit Citation; Army Good Conduct Medal (4th Award); National Defense Service Medal; NCO Professional Development Ribbon (Numeral 2); and Army Service Ribbon.

Since leaving active duty in 2000, SSG Snyder has continued to serve the U.S. Army in civil service as a photographer and museums specialist with the U.S. Army Center of Military History, Museums Directorate photographing and inventorying the Army Art collection. He is currently a Visual Information Specialist in the Center's Histories Directorate, Historical Products Division designing historical books, pamphlets, brochures, posters, and electronic publications.

SSG Snyder is a former member of the Fells Point Art Gallery, Baltimore, and Aletha's Art Gallery, Monkton, Maryland. He is currently a commissioned painter and freelance illustrator. His work may be viewed on his Web site at www.snyderart.com.
