Army Historian - Additional Skill Identifier 5X

Officers holding the ASI 5X are qualified to supervise unit-level historians from battalion to division level or to serve as unit historians themselves.

Personnel holding the 5X ASI are trained to advise the commander and chief of staff on the execution of the unit historical program and the incorporation of military history into professional development programs and operational planning processes. Key skills taught include the following: collect and preserve documents in hard-copy and digital form; collect, catalog, and preserve historically significant artifacts; conduct oral history interviews; plan and conduct battlefield staff rides; and foster an appreciation of the Army's history and heritage among Soldiers.

The image depicts a group of military personnel in a classroom setting. The soldiers, dressed in various military uniforms, are seated around tables arranged in a U-shape, facing a speaker at the front of the room. The speaker, also in uniform, is sitting in front of a large projection screen, leading a discussion or presentation. The room is well-lit, with overhead lights and a ceiling-mounted projector. The walls of the classroom are adorned with framed pictures and military insignia. The atmosphere suggests a formal, instructional environment, likely focused on military education or training.

To be nominated by the U.S Army Center of Military History for award of the 5X ASI, US Army personnel must:

Possess a minimum of 18 credit hours in history from a regionally accredited college or university OR complete a Master of Military Art & Science degree in history during CGSS. Personnel must then complete CGSS elective A625 either in residence or via distance learning and submit a memorandum of request to the Director, Department of History, CGSS (Resident Course only) or to the Chief, Field and International History Programs Division, U.S. Army Center of Military History (Distance Learning Course only), including a copy of all transcripts. US Navy, US Marine Corps, US Air Force, US Coast Guard, and all international military students: completion of the above requirements will be our recommendation to your service stating that you have satisfied the US Army's requirements to serve as a field historian, and that your records be annotated accordingly.
