Charred remains of chaplain kit carried by Medal of Honor recipient CH (MAJ) Charles J. Watters while serving Company A, 173d Support Battalion, 173d Airborne Brigade.

Chaplain Watters received the Medal of Honor posthumously for his actions assisting wounded Soldiers on 19 November 1967 during the battle at Hill 875 near Dak To, Republic of Vietnam.

Place and Date: Near Dak To Province, Republic of Vietnam, 19 November 1967

Chaplain Watters repeatedly moved into exposed areas during the fighting near Dak To to assist wounded Soldiers, help evacuate casualties, provide encouragement, and administer last rites. He carried wounded men to safety, returned outside the defensive perimeter several times to recover injured troops, and continued assisting medics and caring for Soldiers until he was mortally wounded. His actions reflected extraordinary gallantry, perseverance, and devotion to his comrades.
